About Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the digestive tract to a certain extent associated with digestive organs. The digestive or Gastro-Intestinal (GI) tract is the main component of the digestive system and consists of an irregular 'tube'  incorporating the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, small bowel, large bowel, rectum and ending with the anus.

This specialty includes the treatment of a wide range of problems, such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, swallowing disorders, heartburn, ulcers, colitis, hepatitis, jaundice, bleeding, and colon polyps.
